BLACK-EYED STARS
September 22, 2007
Organized by guest curator Andrew Hunter, this exhibition features
the work of Paterson Ewen, Ed Pien, Susanna Heller, Kim Moodie
and Chris Down. At the centre of the mix is Paterson Ewen who,
as an arts educator, had links with Ed Pien, Susanna Heller and
Kim Moodie. Added to this combination is Chris Down (a student
of and assistant to Pien and Moodie). Down will produce a site-executed
wall painting in response to the works of the four other artists.
The title of the exhibition is drawn from the title of a work
by Heller, Black-Eyed Stars over Brooklyn, with its hints of damage,
sorrow and suffering imbedded in the landscape, frames the installation.
The title also echoes the folk-based music of the likes of Woody
Guthrie and The Cowboy Junkies, linking it to an oral tradition
of story-telling that embraces the notion of influence, honouring
and retelling is at the heart of Hunter’s distinctly unorthodox
curatorial project. This exhibition takes place at Museum London.
Call 519-661-0333 or visit the website www.museumlondon.ca for
additional information.
RHIANNA
& AKON
September 23, 2007
Rihanna hit the ground running with her 2005 single “Pon
De Replay”. The irresistibly catchy tune, from her debut
Music of the Sun, peaked at number two on the U.S. Billboard Top
100. The album hit the top 10 in Canada and the U.S., and sold
two million copies worldwide. After touring with Gwen Stefani,
the Barbados-born singer released her sophomore album, A Girl
Like Me, and acted in her first film role in Bring it On Yet Again.
The first single “S.O.S.”, which utilized the electro-funk
of Soft Cell’s ’80s hit “Tainted Love”,
was used by Nike as a theme song and was Rihanna’s first
number one. Her latest is Good Girl Gone Bad, which has already
given her the top ten singles “Umbrella” (with Jay-Z)
and “Shut Up and Drive”. “Don’t Matter”,
the third single from Akon’s double platinum and counting
Konvicted, has soared to the top of the Hot 100 Singles, Hot 100
Airplay, and the Rhythm Crossover format. The track follows the
hit multi-platinum superstar artist/writer/producer’s hits
“Smack That” (with Eminem) and “I Wanna Love
You”. The video for the top-requested song is also breaking
new ground, becoming a mainstay at BET, VH-1, and MTV. The Senegalese
singer (and son of an accomplished jazz musician), Akon first
hit the charts in 2003 with his debut Trouble, which featured
the single “Locked Up”. Konvicted is his second album.
Akon recently stole the show on the Worldwide Live Earth broadcast
from New York. Please call 1-866-455-2849 or visit the website

are able to attain their own sound whilst standing apart from
the pack. Don’t miss FALL OUT BOY with special guests GYM
